Due to the limitations that EV truck batteries face in mileage range, they're best suited for drayage transportation, or the movement of goods across short distances. So, trucking companies are making efforts to develop short-haul EV trucks and put them to use at ports and intermodal logistics facilities. How electric trucks navigate long-haul shipping is one of the main issues that the trucking industry faces as it looks to expand EV usage. Performance Team, a subsidiary of shipping giant Maersk, deployed Volvo short-haul EV trucks in Southern California for distribution facilities and warehouses starting last October. Regardless of how these EV trucks are being deployed to lower carbon emissions, the goal is also for them to save the trucking companies money.

To many executives, including Wall Street bank chiefs, even the ones who say a recession is in the cards, it isn't looking like a Fed-induced disaster scenario. In one particular way, the positioning this year is giving CFOs an even bigger role than they've had over the past decade of economic growth. "[Companies] are not imaging a draconian outcome for their own spending, their own budgets, and in that context," Arora told CNBC's Sara Eisen at Davos 2023. For many years in this hyper-growth environment, people were spending quickly to drive growth and CFOs were having to call them and say 'why are you spending so much money?' The Citi CIO Survey released on January 12, forecasts a slower growth rate for tech spending — well below the Covid peak and below the historical average, and down from Citi's last forecast in the Fall — but still representing a modest rate of growth.

The parking lots where EVs recharge are a growing focus of construction efforts linked to climate change and carbon reduction. A law approved in France last month requires that parking lots with 80 or more spaces be covered by solar panels within the next five years. For the biggest parking lots, those with more than 400 spaces, three years has been granted to have at least half of the parking lot's surface area covered by solar. Similar renewable energy design ideas are expected to gain more market share in the U.S. if not necessarily through a federal mandate.
